Trick or Treat for the Hungry
On Halloween night, in Hilliard, Ohio, fellow humanities scholars and I took advantage of a unique opportunity to give back to the Columbus community, surrounding The Ohio State University. Instead of just trick or treating simply for the sake of candy and having fun with buds on Halloween, when we approached a house instead of asking for candy for ourselves we asked for can food for the hungry. Minus the bitter cold, howling wind, and torrential downpour, it was a great night. Not only were we doing something for those less fortunate then ourselves but we were having a great time doing it as well. Dressed in full costume my group of scholars truly had a blast walking around the Hilliard neighborhood collecting canned, and non-perishable food items. In the process of things we got some candy of our own too!

Trick or treating was fun. My group collected quite a bit of food, and we even got candy from a few houses. Some of the houses were OSU alumni, so we ended up singing Carmen Ohio. It was a really good experience with really good people for a really good cause, and I would not hesitate to do it again!
ReplyDeleteTreat the Hungry was a great way to get students off of campus to do something for the less fortunate. Although it was cold and rainy, it was fun to see how generous people were. It also gave Humanities as well as Ohio State a good reputation because so many students were willing to take time out of their day to help the hungry. There was a great turn out and I think people were impressed with our enthusiasm. I would definitely participate again in the future.
ReplyDeleteTreat the Hungry was one of the things I was most thrilled about when I joined the Humanities Scholars, since trick or treating was one of my favorite pastimes. My Captain America outfit seemed to garner some fun attention, and overall we met some super generous people and their adorable dogs (I think 90% of the neighborhood owned a dog). Overall, it was a great way to spend Halloween!
ReplyDeleteTreat the Hungry was a great time! It was a little cold and rainy but besides that it was fun! It was really great to see how members of the community just knew that we coming and had so much to give. The group I was with collected a lot of cans and even a little bit of candy! I also liked that some people dressed up for this-I think Captain America was my favorite. It was probably one of my favorite events.
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treat for the Hungry was a lot of fun! My roommates and I went together and enjoyed being able to help the food bank. We all dressed up, even though it was quite chilly, and went door to door collecting cans. We got quite a few and some candy too. Overall it was a good way to spend Halloween!
ReplyDeleteThis was a really great event. I've never done much volunteer or service before college, and humanities has offered me a great opportunity for that. This was on of my favorite humanities events. Most families knew we were coming, and were more than happy to donate. Getting some candy didn't hurt either! I look forward to doing it next year.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this event. The bus ride to the neighborhood was longer than expected and became rather hot, but once we got outside and started knocking on doors, we all realized how cold it was. Despite the weather, it was a great experience. Some of the families made comments indicating they remember the Humanities Scholars from last year. I hope that we continue to do this event and the neighborhood begins to completely recognize us each Halloween.
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treating for the Hungry was an enjoyable experience. While it was a bit awkward going up to the houses without costumes at first, once the people realized what we were doing, we were greeted very warmly. Some of the houses were ready with cans as soon as we knocked, showing a great respect for the Humanities program. I will definitely do this event again next year.
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treat for the Hungry was my favorite Humanities activity. It felt good to do something for someone else. Even though we were collecting canned goods most of the houses gave us candy too which just made the night that much better. Every house my group went to gave several cans!
ReplyDeleteTreat the Hungry was such a fun activity! It felt great to get out of the dorms and onto the streets of Columbus to do something good for others, not to mention meet some new people! We sang Carmen, Ohio for one household and were greeted by an adorable baby in a dinosaur costume at another. All in all, it was a great day.
ReplyDeleteTreat the Hungry was very fun. I have always enjoyed volunteer work, so when I heard about this, I was pretty excited. The neighborhood was very generous with their donations. While most of the houses donated a few cans, my group collected canned goods from a very kind woman who went out and bought a box of canned goods specifically to donate to us that night, which was our biggest donation. We ended up with a lot of candy for ourselves as well. This neighborhood also had some of the friendliest dogs, which is always a plus! This was a great experience, and I would love to participate again in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhen my plans for halloween got cancelled due to weather, I was actually kind of excited that I got to trick or treat for the hungry. I had no idea what to expect, as I've never done anything like it on halloween before. There were many people that donated generous amounts of food, and some that gave just one can. Regardless, every bit helped. I couldn't believe the amount of food we all brought back! It was a bunch of fun, despite the wet and cold weather, and can't wait to do it again!
ReplyDeleteWith the cold, rainy, generally miserable weather I fully expected this event to be boring and a waste of time. I'm glad to say I was wrong! Despite the long bus ride, the night was a huge success! It felt great to get away from campus and take part in an activity that would be benefiting others. The generous people of Hilliard really came through, many of them were waiting for us with bags of canned food already prepared. Treat the Hungry is definitely a must for all freshman Humanities Scholars!
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treat for the Hungry was easily my favorite humanities event thus far in the year. It was so rewarding to be able to go out and really serve our new community by helping out the homeless. It was also lovely to share this experience with new friends. Also, candy!!
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treating for the Hungry was I think the best activity so far. I liked how we were able to pull together and collect so much food for the hungry. While it was rather cold and rainy that didn't hamper our spirit or the people we obtained the food from. The people were very generous and it was refreshing to see so many people willing to help the less fortunate. I think this was the most proactive event we've had so far and I loved every minute of it. I think this is a great idea and I would encourage every freshman next year to participate and see the Humanities Scholar's spirit!
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treat for the Hungry was one of the most fun and satisfying events the Humanities Scholars have held. Everyone in the neighborhood was gracious. One woman gave us 2 whole bags of canned goods. I can't imagine a better way to spend Halloween.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, know I remember where all my bags went XD. Trick or treating was fun, but I had a math quiz that day and had to run back. My group wound up getting like 4 or so bags of food and everyone we met was very giving.
