8th Floor Improv

8th Floor Improv, one of the many groups at OSU dedicated to performing, had a show on Friday August 24. While I was initially unsure as to why it counted as an event for Humanities, I decided to go anyways because I needed a good laugh. It was a really fantastic show, with absolutely phenomenal improv skits.  I had a fantastic time, but when it was over I was still unsure of how exactly it pertained to the Humanities. As I thought about it more, I remembered that this particular show was advertised as “The Facebook Show.” The performers asked for an audience member to log into their Facebook, then started messing with it, ranging from adding people as friends, unfriending the volunteer’s mom to messaging strangers. While it was an absolute riot, it also focused on a major tenant of the Humanities: culture. Our modern culture is centered around technology, especially social media. 8th Floor Improv took Facebook, which encourages physical isolation by making it easier to connect with people through a medium other than spending time together, and brought a group of strangers together in one room. But mostly it was really funny.

  1. I attended this event as well, and it was indeed hilarious. However, I personally believe that 8th floor Improv, the group itself, is connected to the humanities, because it is part of culture and interaction among people. The "improvers" as I will call them, acted out awkward social situations, and even had "fights" over things, which demonstrated how people can interact with one another. It can also be loosely seen as connected to the humanities because while you are there, no matter how big the crowd is, everyone is there for the same reason, to laugh. That common goal is shared, and the audience becomes similar to a community for around 2 hours. A major theme of humanities is the human experience, and what's a better experience than a college imrpov show?

  2. I went to this show and it was by far one of the funniest comedy shows I have saw in a long time. I feel bad for the volunteer who allowed them access to their facebook. Things got really awkward really fast, and, although it was funny for the rest of us, she had a lot of work ahead of her as far as recovering from it. Aside from this, the show was good-natured and fun. I would definitely go see them again. I would also mention their links to the theme of humanities, but the links I noticed have already been mentioned. All and all though, what a fun night!

  3. This show was incredibly funny. I liked the two previous shows I had been to enough, but this one topped both of them easily. It started off strongly, and I was mostly impressed when they asked for a suggestion and someone readily shouted "BADGER!" I mean, that guy must have been carrying that suggestion in his head all day. I was just really impressed with how prepared he was. Overall it was one of their best shows and if they ever do it again I will definitely be first in line to see it.
